Host an Event
Help raise awareness about the needs of refugees or human trafficking in our community or by hosting an event. A representative from Opening Doors will assist your group, providing a presentation tailored to the group’s interests. Events can range from informal meetings to donation drives that collect items or money to benefit the Opening Doors clients your group chooses to assist. Co-sponsorship

Church or community co-sponsors are groups of six to twelve individuals that have come together to provide a crucial, dual-service role to an incoming refugee family. As friends, co-sponsors offer a welcoming, encouraging and supportive host community that helps refugees acclimate to their new community. As mentors, the groups help the newcomers to navigate and understand our community and culture.

Working with Opening Doors case managers, co-sponsoring group can help provide any of the following services:

  • Set up the apartment before the family arrives
  • Meet the family at the airport
  • Invite the family over for dinners
  • Introduce local grocery stores and money saving techniques
  • Introduce free or low cost entertainment options
  • Expose the family to low cost clothing stores
  • Assist the family with appointments
  • Help the family navigate local school systems
  • Help them find a place of worship
  • Assist them in the search for employment
  • Help them learn to use the public transportation system
  • Co-sponsors will also encourage refugees to connect with other refugees in their respective community for mutual support and networking
